The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, Nottle Theatre Company, SIDance, are just a few of the Korean dance companies, Korean dance schools, dancing organizations and dance wear suppliers that that can be found in our comprehensive Directory of Korean Dance Companies.

Traditional Korean dance and music evolved from the religious ceremonies of primitive tribes some 3,000 years ago.

Possibly the most popular and best known dances are those from the Philippine lowlands. A place of extreme beauty and love of life and simplicity, the lowlands have a passion for music. A spirited dance from Bayambang is the Binasuan, which is basically a balancing act. The dancers skillfully handle glasses are partially filled with rice wine and usually perform at birthdays and weddings. Maglalatik, a simulated-war dance, is a four part dance which starts out with mock-fighting and ends with reconciliation. Initially a depiction of a fight between the Christians and Moros, it is also performed as a mark of respect for San Isidro de Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.

Korean dance is more than simply a form of entertainment It is an expression of a metaphysical philosophy Koreans have traditionally believed that the human body is a universe unto itself and that man's ideal existence lies in harmony with heaven and earth.

The earliest evidence of Korean dance is found in historical records from China and Korea and, as mentioned above, in the murals found in Muryongsh'ong the Tomb of the Dancers dating back to Koguryo. Among the extant written records is the Akhak Kwoebim (Canon of Musical Science), a comprehensive study of Korean music and dance compiled during the reign of Choson King Songjong (r. 1469-1494). This record provides explicit descriptions of dances, costumes props procedures and instruments and has helped modern artists recreate many traditional dances.

Korean traditional dance is generally divided into two categories court dance and folk dance. Court dance dates back to the Silla period and was actively promoted during the Koryo Kingdom, a period known for its love of festivals Court dance took its present form during the strictly Confucian Choson period. In the Choson period, court dance was divided into chongXaemu, which was performed at court festivals, and ilmu, which was a ritual dance.

Featured Korean Dance Company
SIDance
SIDance was created by CID-UNESCO (Conseil International de la Danse) Korea Chapter in 1998 as a proper channel for introducing Korean dance to international stages as well as worldwide trends to the local dance scene. Korean dance had experienced a severe lack of international exchanges, but that has been surmounted, to a certain degree, since the formation of the CID-UNESCO Korea Chapter in 1996. SIDance stands out among its various activities to promote Korean dance. A brief history of Korean dance will better explain SIDance's role.
Korea's first glimpse of Western dance, including classical ballet, came in the early 20th century at an inconsistent pace through indirect routes. The modernization of Korean ethnic dance and rigid learning of Western dance took place languidly after independence from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. Martha Graham's techniques were introduced in the 1960s and were followed by the vigorous creation of contemporary dances in the 1970s. The 1980s was considered a renaissance for Korean dance: 2nd and 3rd generation choreographers began to replace the tradition-bound 1st generation. However, this new wave of choreographers themselves divulged serious limitations as major creative forces in the 1990s. Their abilities failed to meet international standards, so they mainly served as stepping stones for the next generation in their 20s and 30s.

Nottle Theatre Company
founded in 1993, has been endeavoring to find a new theatrical language and to make experimental performances. Not adhered only to the 'word' taking it for the sole and absolute theatrical language, Nottle tries to find a new form of 'universal' theatrical language. It spreads across a wide range of theatre language such as voice, contemporary dance, mime, percussion. Its repertories are all unique band of performance with spiritual insight, vibrant movement and a lot of imagination. In its previous touring and collaborative workshop all over the world, the focus of the artistic approach is very energetic and physical, combining movement and form in a simple and direct way.
Theatre Company Nottle抯 goal is an accessible and sympathetic theatre and denies esoteric view or mysterious Orientalism. It means wherever it visits, the audiences can communicate with the stage and share a universal truth beyond any distinction. It is believed to be accomplished its goal through continuous communication with artists in a variety of different background.

The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts traces its roots all the way back to the Eumseongseo, the Silla Dynasty's Royal Institute of Music, over fourteen hundred years ago. This institute continues to honor the mandate to preserve the numerous art works that have originated from Korea during its five thousand year history, as well as many East Asian art traditions that deeply reflect the spirit of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Zen. Additionally we actively promote and support the birth and rebirth of many contemporary creative works, some of which will become the traditional arts of tomorrow.
